To edit and apply special effects to portions of your pictures, remove unwanted objects, or cut out objects from one picture and put them on another, that portion or object should be selected using a selection tool or a combination of selection tools in Pixelmator.
Since the Polygonal Lasso tool precisely draws straight-edged selections, it is handy for selecting angular objects.
Step 1
Open an image—preferably one with a straight-edged object or area that you’d like to select in Pixelmator.

Step 2
Click to select the Polygon Lasso Tool in the Tools palette.
For smooth selection borders, select Smooth Edges from the Action menu before making a selection. For jagged yet precise edges, deselect Smooth Edges before making a selection.

Step 3
Now let’s move on to using the Lasso Tool. Click on any edge of the object you want to select, to set the starting point. Continue clicking around the object to set endpoints and to close the selection, do one of the following:
Position the pointer over the starting point. A closed circle appears next to the pointer. Click to close the selection borders.
Double-click the pointer anywhere on the image to complete the selection.
Press the Return key on your keyboard.

Step 4
Once a selection has been made, selection borders can be easily modified as necessary.
To modify the selection borders, choose one of the following selection modes in the Tool Options bar:
![]() |
New | Creates a new selection. |
![]() |
Add To | Adds new selection to an existing selection. |
![]() |
Subtract | Subtracts from an existing selection. |
![]() |
Intersect | Subtracts the overlap of two selections. |
Draw using the Polygonal Lasso Tool to add to, subtract from, or intersect with an existing selection.
Please note that any other selection tool may be used to modify the selection borders as well.

Step 5
Once a selection is complete, any changes may be added to the selected region. For example, a selected area or object can be moved, rotated, scaled, flipped, duplicated, cut, filled, inverted, or copied and pasted elsewhere. Also, color adjustments and corrections, various special effects, and filters can be applied to the selection.
To sum it all up: The Polygonal Lasso Tool is useful for making precise selections of angularly shaped objects.

Hello Noobs how are you?
Hello Yonas! Doing good
Step 4 above is anything but clearly expressed. E.g., how does the topic “modify selection border” fit with “create a new selection”? Why, if I want to do something to a border, would I “add a new selection to an existing selection.”
Tutorials should not be written for people who already know what all this means already.
You need a tutorial video for this topic. It’s easier to pick up when you watch someone preform the function. Thanks.
How do I do this with round objects?
You can select round objects using the Elliptical Marquee Tool as explained in this tutorial:

Or, the Lasso Tool:
