Romantic Fairytale Effect

Romantic Fairytale Effect

Giving your images a romantic fairytale look is a piece of cake, and delightful results are always assured.

Layers, the Gradient Tool, and the Colorize color adjustment are used in this tutorial.

Step 1

Open an image to which you would like to add a romantic fairytale look in Pixelmator.

Step 2

Click to select the Gradient Tool (G) in the Tools palette. In the Gradients palette (View > Show Gradients), click the Action button and choose New Gradient to create a new gradient. In the Gradient settings, create a linear gradient using two soft pink colors.

Step 3

Once the gradient is created, click the Add button (+) to add a new layer in the Layers palette (View > Show Layers) and apply the recently created gradient by drawing a vertical line with the Gradient Tool (G).

Step 4

To create a soft and subtle blend, change the layer’s Blending mode to Soft Light, in the Layers palette.

Step 5

Click to create another new layer in the Layers palette. In the Gradients palette, click to select the sky blue gradient preset and apply it to the recently created layer using the Gradient Tool (G).

Step 6

In order to blend the blue gradient with the image, change the gradient layer’s Blending to Soft Light and reduce the Opacity to 30%.

Step 7

Add another new blank layer. To fill the layer, choose Edit > Fill and in the Fill palette set the Color to soft yellow. Click OK.

Step 8

To blend the yellow color tone with the image, set the recently created layer’s Blending to Overlay and reduce the Opacity to approximately 30%.

Step 9

To create a violet color tone, first duplicate the image layer to which you’re applying the effect (in our case, the portrait of a girl) by choosing Layer > Duplicate. Then choose Image > Colorize and spin the dot around the color wheel until the image is colored with the desired tone. Click OK.

Step 10

In order to tone down the recent Colorize adjustment, change the duplicated image layer Blending to Multiply and reduce the Opacity to 20-30%. And the romantic fairytale effect is complete!
