With image editing, users have the power to cause rain in any picture. Even more, creating a stunning rain fall is very easy, and the result looks true to life.
Layers, filters, and color adjustment tools are used in this tutorial.
Step 1
Open an image to which you would like to apply the rain effect in Pixelmator.

Step 2
Click to create a new layer by clicking the Add button (+) in the Layers palette (View > Show Layers). Double-click on the layer name to change its name to “Rain.”

Step 3
Choose Filter > Generator > Clouds. Make sure the Primary Color is black and the Secondary Color is white. Click OK to apply the filter.

Step 4
Once the Clouds filter is applied, choose Filter > Stylize > Noise. Set the Noise Amount to 60-65. Make sure the Monochrome checkbox is selected. Monochrome creates the grayscale noise. Click OK to apply the filter.
Please note that the Noise filter looks most accurate with a 100% Zoom (View > Actual Pixels).

Step 5
In the Layers palette, change the “Rain” layer’s Blending mode to Screen, as Screen mode creates a bleached effect. Also, reduce the Opacity to 45%.

Step 6
Choose Filter > Blur > Motion. Change the radius value to approximately 10. Set Angle to any preferred value. Modify the Angle parameter to set the rain falling direction and click OK when done.

Step 7
Choose Image > Brightness and Contrast. Experiment with the values to make the image look brighter. Click OK. Now it’s raining!

Once you’ve learned to create the rain effect, feel free to experiment by applying it to different images. For maximum true to life results, choose pictures with a wet ground or wet objects.
Whoa, so cool…
Amazing! I have been dying to get Photoshop because, I hate switching laptops to use Paint Shop Pro and I just downloaded the trial to this and it is amazing! I really want this! It’s going to help me a lot with my site!
Loved it! This was my first try and now I’m happy I bought the program. I’m a beginner that has no knowledge of programs like this or similar and I was able to follow along.
Photo-shoped! I know it actually is and that’s the point, humour aside, you’ve forgotten the uninterrupted ripples in the water. I realise that this isn’t applicable in every picture but perfection lies in details.
Wow, that definitely looks real, especially at a quick glance. If somebody didn’t know that was photoshopped, they’d wouldn’t think to question it at all
it is very good thanks share it.
Sorry. Not convinced over here.
First, the woman’s blouse should be wet. Were she actually sitting in the rain, it would be, and we would all be able to see through it.
Second, there are no splashes in the water in the picture. There should at least be some water splashes from the rain drops.
Good effort, though.
That is really cool how you did that. Question…if this picture didn’t already have wet ground in the forefront, how would you have addressed that? If you use an image with dry ground and add rain it isn’t going to look right!
Great job at this, I totally thought this was a picture of a woman in the rain. I was wondering though, why none of her skin was visible through her white clothing. Then I scrolled down the page and saw the rain was added in and it made sense!
It works well, and the steps are easy to follow. I love it.
can’t believe it was so easy !! thanx for sharing.. i’m so happy i bought it
sweeeeeeeeet!!!!!!!
nice.
aciu.
Needs splashes or third plane…
I tried some of the other tutorials and found them hard but I persevered with the rain effect and got what I wanted, so now I can buy it! I figured if I can’t do even one of the lessons what is the point of spending money on the whole package! So happy, and it looks great on my water scene on pier 39…
